Mac OS X Software

I am not a programmer. I just happen to know enough about Bash scripting to be able to put together some simple apps. That said, they are pretty useful, and free, so please try them out and enjoy. They are all under active development, so feel free to contact me if you have any problems, questions, concerns, requests, etc. If you really like my apps, please consider donating.

  • iPodBackup icon iPodBackup is a shell script-turned-application that backs up your home folder to your iPod using the open source backup utility rsync. Combine it with Do Something When to have fully automated incremental backups to your iPod, for free!
  • Firefoxy icon Firefoxy is an app that applies Kevin Gerich's fancy Firefox widgets via drag-and-drop. Just drag Firefox onto Firefoxy, and it will do its thing. Drag it on a second time to revert to the default widgets. Or just open the app and it will prompt you to locate Firefox.
  • PNGCrusher icon PNGCrusher is a simple app that optimizes the filesize of PNG images. Just drag any number of PNG files onto the app and they will be processed by the open source OptiPNG, which provides better compression rates than the standard pngcrush. If you deal with png images a lot, especially in web development, this app could save you time and bandwidth!
  • Shinyubin icon Shinyubin is a Kotoeri dictionary that matches Japanese ZIP codes to their addresses. That means that if you input, for instance, "2120023," you will get "神奈川県川崎市幸区戸手本町," which is exactly the location that that ZIP code defines according to the Japanese Post Office. If you need to input a lot of Japanese addresses, this dictionary could be very helpful to you.

How to be a half-assed programmer like me

  1. Write a script in TextEdit (or my favorite, SubEthaEdit)
  2. Consult Mendel Cooper's Advanced Bash-Scripting Guide when stuck
  3. Download Platypus and package your script with it
  4. Submit your app to software tracker websites and hope for the best
